Risky, poorly tested genetically modified (GM) crops are in our food despite strong consumer rejection. We know nobody needs these products and nobody wants them, but we also know how they got where they are today: we call it GM Diplomacy — big business using its money to influence policy overseas and at home, too.

While the companies promoting these technologies make big promises, they won’t to accept liability for any damage done by their products. Negative impacts on our health or environment could take years to fully emerge, and because there is no proper post-release monitoring, we don’t even know if they’ve begun already.

Where regulators fail to protect us, things go wrong. US rice farmers contaminated in 2006 by experimental GM won millions in the courts from the companies juries say were intentionally careless. The truth is farmers shouldn’t have to go to court because the GM industry can’t control its product. In Europe, unlike the US, labels show consumers where GM ingredients have been used. This does not apply to meat, milk or eggs come from animals fed GM, so many consumers are unwittingly supporting not just the biotech industry, but also industrial GM soy plantations in Latin America. This violates our basic right to know and also interferes with the operation of the market – if consumes don’t have decent information we can’t make the best choices. Because consumers reject GM, companies that produce GM feed are reluctant to help us get the information we want about the use of their products.

A chorus of voices from government, industry and big farming unions insist Europeans must embrace GM animal feed. This view is profoundly out of touch, yet in April 2013 many UK supermarkets abandoned their long-standing non-GM feed policies. Food & Water Europe works with small and family farmers to fight GM crops.

The hidden use of GM feed is not proof it is needed, or even accepted. Food & Water Europe thinks consumers need clear labels so we can do more to ensure we buy in ways that doesn’t merely export the damage caused by cheap meat.
